What is Diesel Tuning?

Diesel tuning, also known as ECU remapping or chip tuning, is the process of modifying your vehicle's engine control unit (ECU) to optimize performance, fuel efficiency, and drivability. At Stealth Installs, we use advanced dyno testing and professional tuning software to unlock your diesel engine's true potential.

Unlike generic mail-order tunes, every Stealth Installs tune is custom-tailored to your specific vehicle and driving requirements. We don't just flash a generic file – we thoroughly assess your vehicle, perform comprehensive diagnostics, and create a bespoke tune that maximizes performance while maintaining reliability.

Our dyno-testing facility allows us to measure real-world performance gains, ensuring you get the power, torque, and fuel economy improvements we promise. Whether you're towing heavy loads, heading off-road, or just want better daily drivability, we tailor the tune to your needs.

The 70 Series 1VD-FTV is one of our most tuned platforms. Toyota left significant headroom in the factory calibration — our custom remap transforms this workhorse, delivering huge gains in both power and torque for towing, touring, and overtaking. These results require aftermarket modifications to be achieved.

EGR Cable vs. Proper ECU Calibration

EGR Cable vs Proper ECU Calibration comparison

Many aftermarket EGR cables are marketed as a quick and inexpensive way to stop EGR operation. However, it's important to understand that an EGR cable doesn't actually reprogram your vehicle's ECU. Instead, it works by modifying or simulating electrical signals so the ECU believes the EGR system is operating as expected.

While this can prevent the EGR valve from functioning in some applications, the ECU is still running its original factory calibration. It continues to make engine management decisions based on the assumption that EGR operation is occurring, even when it isn't. On some vehicles, this can result in less refined drivability, reduced optimisation, or fault codes if the ECU detects inconsistencies through its other sensors.

A professional ECU calibration takes a different approach. Rather than attempting to trick the ECU, the engine management software is recalibrated so the control strategy matches the intended operating configuration. This provides a more integrated solution than relying on an external signal-modifying device.

At Stealth Installs, we believe in using the correct engineering approach for every vehicle rather than relying on shortcut solutions.

*Please note: Modifications to emissions control systems may not be legal for use on public roads and are subject to Australian laws and regulations.

What Is ECU Benching and Why Is It Sometimes Required?

Not every vehicle can be tuned through the diagnostic (OBD) port. Many modern vehicles, trucks and commercial platforms are fitted with ECUs that have advanced security measures designed to prevent unauthorised access.

In these cases, the ECU must be removed and connected directly to specialised equipment in a process known as ECU benching or bench unlocking.

The Truth About Diesel Tuning and Your Warranty

Will a remap void your warranty? Under Australian Consumer Law, a dealer cannot simply void your entire warranty because you've had your vehicle tuned — but they can refuse a specific claim if the modification caused the failure. Here's what you need to know before you tune.
