What Is ECU Benching?
Why some vehicles require direct ECU access for custom tuning

Bench Unlocking Explained
Salisbury, Adelaide
Not every vehicle can be tuned through the diagnostic (OBD) port. Many modern vehicles, trucks and commercial platforms are fitted with ECUs that have advanced security measures designed to prevent unauthorised access.
In these cases, the ECU must first be removed from the vehicle and connected directly to specialised equipment in a process known as ECU benching or bench unlocking.
Secure Access
Direct communication with the ECU to unlock factory protection where appropriate.
Specialised Equipment
Professional bench programming equipment for safe reading and writing of calibration data.
Individual Assessment
Every vehicle is assessed to determine whether OBD or bench tuning is the right approach.
Why Is ECU Benching Sometimes Required?
Benching allows us to establish direct communication with the ECU, unlock the factory protection where appropriate, and safely read and write the calibration data required for custom ECU tuning.
This process is commonly required on newer diesel vehicles and some European models where the manufacturer has restricted programming through the OBD port.
Once the ECU has been unlocked, we can perform custom recalibration to improve power delivery, torque, throttle response and overall drivability while maintaining safe operating parameters for your specific vehicle and its intended use.

Our Bench Tuning Process
At Stealth Installs, we use professional bench programming equipment and proven procedures to ensure your ECU is handled safely throughout the process. Every vehicle is assessed individually to determine the most suitable tuning method, whether that's through the OBD port or by directly accessing the ECU on the bench.
If your vehicle requires ECU benching, we'll explain the process, expected turnaround time and any additional requirements before any work begins, so you know exactly what's involved.
