A catch can is one of the best investments you can make for the longevity of your engine. Modern diesels produce blow-by gases that carry oil vapor back into the intake — contaminating your intercooler, intake manifold, and valves over time. A quality catch can captures that oil before it becomes a problem.
We fully support and exclusively fit HPD catch cans. They're baffled, hand-polished, built right here in SA, and they look fantastic. Most importantly, they capture most of the oil vapor while never restricting flow — giving your engine the breathability it needs.
The Problem
Not all catch cans are created equal — and the wrong one can actually cause more harm than good.
Oil Contamination
Without a catch can, blow-by gases carry oil vapor back into your intake system. Over time, that oil coats and contaminates your intercooler, intake manifold, and valves — reducing efficiency and shortening engine life.
Restriction from Other Catch Cans
The problem with a lot of other catch cans on the market is they try to block too much of the oil vapor using a full-on high-density micron filter. Even with good maintenance, they can become a restriction — choking your engine's breathability and causing issues that far outweigh the slight amount of oil that still passes through a baffled design.

The HPD catch can is baffled — it captures most of the oil vapor while still never restricting flow. We've found that engine breathability is just far better with this design, and the slight bit of oil that still passes through the engine far outweighs the problems we see with other catch cans that use a full-on high-density micron filter.
They look really good, they're built right here in SA, they're hand-polished, and they come with extremely helpful advice and installation guides. We drain them every time your vehicle comes in for a service — and because draining is so simple, there's never a chance for leakage from hoses below the vehicle, valves becoming loose, or valves being accidentally left shut.
What We've Seen Firsthand
We've had numerous cases where popular-brand catch cans were causing noticeable back pressure inside the crankcase — even when properly maintained and not due for replacement. The moment we swapped them over to an HPD catch can, the back pressure simply wasn't there anymore.
LandCruiser 200 Series
The difference is so noticeable on the 200 Series because these engines don't tend to have any real blow-by or pressure inside the crankcase when they're well looked after — yet the pressure was there the moment a popular-brand catch can was fitted. We've pulled off catch cans that were within maintenance and not due for replacement, seen the back pressure they were causing, and then fitted an HPD — and you just don't get the back pressure at all.
LandCruiser 79 Series
Same story on the 79 Series — these engines don't tend to have any real blow-by or pressure in the crankcase when they're well looked after. But the pressure is there when these popular brands have been fitted. We've seen firsthand how much back pressure they were causing into the engine, even when maintained, and the moment we put an HPD catch can on, you just don't get the back pressure at all.
V6 Amarok
We've also seen drastic problems and a drastic difference on the V6 Amarok. In fact, we've had to rectify rear main seals that have been damaged because of the pressure caused from catch cans — that's how bad the restriction can get. Putting the HPD product on after removing a popular-brand catch can showed such an immediate improvement that we now won't fit any brands that aren't baffled. If it's not baffled, it's not going on your vehicle.
Our standard: We fully support and recommend HPD catch cans — but we're not exclusively HPD. There are still a couple of other brands on the market that make baffled catch cans, and we'll happily fit those if a customer requests it. What we won't do is fit any brand that isn't baffled.
This isn't something we've always done — it's a line in the sand we've only recently drawn. It came directly from what we've seen firsthand on real customer vehicles: how much back pressure non-baffled catch cans can cause inside the crankcase. It's not a theory. It's something we've measured and witnessed, and it's what led us to this decision.
