How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Diesel Tuning

Having your vehicle professionally tuned is one of the best ways to improve drivability, towing performance and overall driving enjoyment. However, before we make any changes to your ECU, it's important that your vehicle is in good mechanical condition.

At Stealth Installs, every tune starts with a health check. We want to ensure we're building a calibration around a healthy engine—not trying to tune around existing mechanical problems.

A little preparation beforehand helps the tuning process run smoothly, reduces the chance of delays on the day and ensures you get the best possible result from your tune.

1. Make Sure Your Vehicle Has Been Serviced Recently

A tune should always be performed on a well-maintained engine.

If your vehicle is overdue for a service, it's worth completing that first before any tuning takes place.

A recent service should include:

• Fresh engine oil
• New oil filter
• General inspection
• Fluid level checks
• Any manufacturer-recommended maintenance

Starting with fresh fluids gives us confidence that the engine is in good condition and helps protect it after the additional performance is unlocked.

2. Check Your Engine Oil Level

This might sound simple, but it's one of the most important checks.

Before bringing your vehicle in, ensure the engine oil is sitting at the correct level on the dipstick.

• Oil that's too low can reduce lubrication and increase engine wear.
• Oil that's significantly overfilled can also create problems.

If you're unsure, we're always happy to check it before tuning begins.

3. Replace Your Fuel Filter if It's Due

Modern common rail diesel engines rely on extremely clean fuel.

Injectors operate under enormous pressures, and even small amounts of contamination can affect performance and reliability.

As a general guide, we recommend the fuel filter has been replaced within the last 12 months or according to your manufacturer's service schedule.

Here in Australia, fuel quality can vary between suppliers and locations. Even if you've had no issues, an old or partially restricted fuel filter can reduce fuel flow and affect the engine under load.

If your fuel filter is overdue, we recommend replacing it before tuning.

If needed, we can also replace it as part of your appointment, either beforehand or on the day.

4. Make Sure the Air Filter Is Clean

Your engine can only perform as well as the air it receives.

A dirty or heavily restricted air filter limits airflow, reducing efficiency and making it difficult to establish an accurate tuning baseline.

When we tune your vehicle, we're calibrating it based on the engine breathing properly.

As the air filter becomes dirty over time, airflow naturally decreases. Replacing the air filter during routine servicing effectively returns the engine to the same baseline the tune was developed around.

If your air filter hasn't been replaced recently, it's a good idea to fit a new one before tuning.

Like fuel filters, we can also replace the air filter during your appointment if required.

5. Make Sure There Are No Unrelated Engine Faults

Before any tuning takes place, we carry out a full diagnostic scan of the vehicle.

If fault codes are present, we'll determine whether they're related to the work being carried out.

Generally OK to Proceed

• DPF-related faults when carrying out DPF-related work
• EGR-related faults when performing EGR-related tuning

Faults That Should Be Repaired First

• Crankshaft position sensor faults
• Camshaft sensor faults
• Cylinder misfires
• Fuel pressure faults
• Injector faults
• Boost pressure faults
• Airflow sensor faults
• Cooling system faults

Tuning doesn't repair mechanical problems.

If an engine already has faults affecting the way it runs, they should be diagnosed and repaired first to ensure the vehicle performs safely and reliably after tuning.

6. Let Us Know About Any Existing Issues

If you've noticed something unusual recently, let us know before we begin.

For example:

• Hard starting
• Poor fuel economy
• Excessive smoke
• Loss of power
• Strange noises
• Transmission concerns
• Warning lights that come and go

Even if the issue seems unrelated, it's always better for us to know before tuning starts.

Sometimes a small concern can point to a larger issue that should be addressed first.

7. Bring the Vehicle with Good Quality Fuel

Whenever possible, arrive with a reasonable amount of fuel from a reputable service station.

Consistent fuel quality helps provide consistent tuning results.

If you regularly use premium diesel from the same supplier, continue doing so after your tune. Consistency is often more beneficial than constantly changing fuel brands.

What Happens If We Find Something?

Occasionally we'll discover an item that should be repaired before tuning.

While this can be disappointing, it's always done in the best interests of both the vehicle and the owner.

Rather than tuning around an existing fault, we'd much rather correct the issue first and build the tune on a healthy engine.

In many cases, it's something straightforward like replacing an overdue fuel filter or air filter.

Once that's taken care of, we can continue with the tuning process knowing the vehicle is in the best possible condition.
